YouTube Channel Transfer Process Explained (2025)

Everything you need to know about transferring YouTube channel ownership: brand accounts, Google transfer steps, timeline, and what can go wrong.

Transferring ownership of a YouTube channel is an official process supported by Google — no password sharing, no “hacking,” no workarounds. It uses the Brand Account ownership system that Google has supported since 2013. This guide explains exactly how it works, step by step, and what can (rarely) go wrong.

What Is a YouTube Brand Account?

A Brand Account is a type of Google account that can be managed by multiple people without sharing passwords. YouTube channels connected to Brand Accounts can have their ownership transferred because the Brand Account itself (not a personal Google account) owns the channel.

When you transfer a YouTube channel, you're technically transferring ownership of the Brand Account. The channel, its subscribers, videos, and history all stay intact.

Before the Transfer: Prerequisites

Both parties need to have these in place before initiating a transfer:

  • Seller: Channel must be on a Brand Account (not a personal Google account). If it's on a personal account, it must be moved first: YouTube Studio → Settings → Channel → Advanced Settings → Move channel.
  • Buyer: Must have a Google account to receive the Brand Account ownership. It can be a Gmail account or a Google Workspace account.
  • Payment: In trusted marketplace transactions, payment is confirmed before the seller initiates the transfer.

Step-by-Step: The Transfer Process

Step 1: Seller Adds Buyer as Manager

The seller goes to myaccount.google.com/brand-accounts, selects the Brand Account, then clicks Manage permissions. They add the buyer's Google account email with the Manager role and send the invitation.

Step 2: Buyer Accepts the Manager Invitation

The buyer receives an email from Google and accepts the invitation. This can take a few minutes to appear. Once accepted, the buyer can see the channel in their YouTube Studio but doesn't fully own it yet.

Step 3: Seller Promotes Buyer to Owner

Back in the Brand Account permissions screen, the seller changes the buyer's role fromManager to Owner. Google may require a waiting period (up to 7 days for some accounts) before this promotion can happen — this is a Google security feature.

In most cases (standard Google accounts), the promotion happens immediately or within a few hours.

Step 4: Seller Removes Themselves

Once the buyer is Owner, the seller removes their own Google account from the Brand Account. The buyer is now the sole owner of the Brand Account — and therefore the YouTube channel.

Step 5: Buyer Confirms Access

The buyer confirms in the channel dashboard (YouTube Studio) that they have full owner access — including access to settings, analytics, and monetization controls. This confirmation closes the transaction.

Typical Timeline

  • Day 0: Payment confirmed
  • Day 0–1: Seller sends Manager invitation to buyer
  • Day 0–1: Buyer accepts invitation
  • Day 1–2: Seller promotes buyer to Owner
  • Day 1–3: Buyer confirms access, seller removes themselves
  • Day 2–3: Transfer complete

Connecting AdSense After Transfer

If the channel is monetized, the buyer needs to connect their own AdSense account. The previous owner's AdSense disconnects automatically once they're removed from the Brand Account. To reconnect:

  1. Go to YouTube Studio → Earn
  2. Click “Get Started” or “Link AdSense”
  3. Sign in or create an AdSense account
  4. Ads resume within 24–48 hours after linking

What Can Go Wrong

Google's 7-Day Ownership Waiting Period

Google sometimes imposes a 7-day waiting period before a newly added Manager can be promoted to Owner. This is a fraud prevention measure. It's uncommon for standard consumer accounts but does occur. A professional marketplace accounts for this in the transfer timeline.

Two-Factor Authentication Issues

If the seller loses access to their Google account during the transfer window (e.g. 2FA device lost), the transfer can stall. Reputable sellers complete transfers promptly to avoid this.

Channel on a Personal Account

Channels on personal Google accounts cannot be directly transferred. They must first be migrated to a Brand Account. This migration is irreversible and takes a few minutes, but must be done before any transfer begins.

Safety Summary

  • ✅ No passwords are ever shared
  • ✅ Both parties use their own Google accounts throughout
  • ✅ The channel's content, subscribers, and history are fully preserved
  • ✅ YouTube does not terminate channels for ownership transfers via Brand Accounts
  • ❌ Avoid any seller who asks for your Google password — this is a scam
  • ❌ Avoid transfers outside of marketplaces without escrow protection
